You're intrigued and your curiosity is peaked by this site of these diligent workers and this new base phenomenon you've witnessed. As you begin to watch for a little bit longer you think of something "huh what if I put a rock in between them and see how they react to change" so you take a small pebble on the side of you and place it right on top of a couple ants crushing some in the process and creating a diverge between the now two lines of ants. This ensites chaos in the back line of ants going crazy darting around everywhere trying to figure out what to do because now they don't know where to go,or how to continue because their line of sight and communication was cut off from the main group. All in all long story short we or the "higher beings" do things like that because we can and have the power to do things of that nature without needing to fear repercussions from anyone, even if it is to sate base curiosity and amusement it's all a drop in the bucket in the scale of things for people like that and they move on to the next intriguing venture.
